We all have our favorite way of processing data and collecting it. Though snmp v1 is a bad idea. v2 and definitely v3 would be ok. At the switching level Access control lists can be implemented to protect the communication between devices. I personally have a group in NPM that is my entire production servers. and I have created a trigger on the "fixed disk" that are on any device in the group. This covers Linux and windows machines. I would definitely setup this if it was possible. My LEM filled up and we had a grand ole time getting it back up and running again. but I called for support and they were very fast to fix it. I just had to except that it was "support ticket time".
